William Faulkner
William Faulkner’s work touched and inspired many lives in the nineteenth century. He was a prolific writer of short stories, poems, and novels. Living a happy but somewhat short life, many would say Faulkner was America’s greatest modern writer because of his great gift of imagination.
William Cuthbert Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. He was born into a family as the first of four sons (Padgett). His mother, Maud Butler Faulkner, and father, Murry Cuthbert, both came from wealthy families (Gold, 1973) with ancestors immigrating from Scotland in the eighteenth century (Alcott, 2000). Faulkner was named after his great grandfather, William Clark Falkner (as the family originally spelled its name), who was nicknamed “The Old Colonel” after being killed in 1885 in a fight with a former business partner (Padgett). Faulkner was very close with his younger brothers, Murry, John, and Dean, and cousin, Sallie Wilkins. They were together everyday.......
