Summary
Leslie Marmon Silko, a descendent of a mixed heritage of Anglo, Mexican, and Native American, was born in 1948 in Albuquerque and raised on the Laguna Pueblo Reservation in New Mexico. She attended Indian Boarding schools and Catholic schools. In 1969, she received her bachelor’s degree in English from University of New Mexico. Later, she attended law school in order to assist Native Americans, but soon quit because she found that the American legal system would never give justice to Native Americans. She then switched to creative writing because “she decided writing would be a better tool” (Arnold vii). By writing up the Native American experience, she can effectively awaken public awareness to the Indian problems.
Compared with her school education, Silko’s family education in the Laguna Pueblos’ tradition and culture plays a more vital role in her writing career. Central to Silko’s traditional and cultural education were several generations of women in her family who......
