As the War in Iraq continues on with no end in sight, one of the recommendations people are making to the President is to increase the number of troops serving there. The question is how might we do that? Currently, we have a volunteer military, but to increase the troops to the number needed, would that require reinstating the draft? Just what is the draft? This paper will explore the draft, and why I am for the draft.
The Draft, otherwise known as the Selective Service System which is and independent federal agency operating with permant authorization under the Military Selective Service Act. Today, the Selective Service System continues providing the only time-tested mechanism to backup the all-volunteer military when needed. If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with the Selective Service. It’s the Law.
