“What does ‘Coffee will make you black’ mean, Mama?”

This novel, centered around a girl, Stevie, who is going through adolescence depicts a time when it wasn’t a good thing to be black. The brighter a black person was, the easier they could be accepted into society. During this time, blacks felt that if they didn’t measure up to a specific shade of brown, then they would have to work harder to achieve success with the belief that it was almost impossible. Stevie is gradually learning what it means to be black with great influence from her mother, grandmother, and friends (old and new) as she searches for meaning and purpose in her life.
