Drugs and Sports: Can They Coexist?
Today we live in a society that thrives on having things faster, stronger, larger, and higher. We have the fast food mentality in everything we attempt to do in our lives, must get our results in whatever we do quickly. This fact is just as prevalent in the sports world as any other aspect of our daily lives. Athletes feel the pressure to perform and realize that they must do whatever they can to gain an edge over the competition. Some athletes feel the pressure and decide to use drugs to help them perform despite their moral beliefs. President Bush said, "It's very important for adults to set good examples for children, whether in politics or sports or business" (qtd. in Sheil). Performance enhancing drugs are illegal, and a number of attempts by the leaders of the sports community and the federal government to control the use of performance enhancing drugs by amateur and professional athletes have failed.
