Utopia

Sir Thomas More authored the book Utopia in 1515. Utopia conveys a vivid imagination of the Island of Utopia, a place considered to be perfect and free of the crises of the 15th and 16th centuries. While More’s Island of Utopia is fictional, there have been many attempts to achieve a utopian society. One such example is John Humphrey Noyes who founded a religious utopian community known as the Oneida Perfectionists in Oneida, New York in 1848. The Oneida Perfectionists created a utopian like community in attempt to establish heaven on earth. While Thomas More believed that with motivation and a structured social, economical, political and religious system individual human nature could be controlled and balanced creating a perfect place, the Oneida members believed by dedication to God and the community in social, economical, political and religious aspects they could create a heaven on earth.
