Human societies have existed since the very beginning of our time, throughout time they’ve evolved to become what we call today cities, and towns. We’ve come a long way since the days of Mesopotamia. The purpose of this book was to map out the rise and fall of every great civilization since the beginning of our time and to point out the ecological factors that affected them. Clive Ponting links the collapse of great civilizations to the environment. Ponting who is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University College show’s how the environment affects the growth and destruction of civilizations. I believe Ponting clearly explained and illustrated it step by step, and he made it clear that history repeats itself. Today we live in modern metropolis with advanced irrigation systems, and we’ve transitioned to fossil fuels. Those commodities provide adequate (standard) living for all of its inhabitants.
