The Canterbury Tales
During the Middle Ages women’s roles in literature varied greatly from their actual roles in the world. In literature they gained strength, importance, and greatly impacted men as they often controlled them. Whereas in reality their roles were miniscule, they lacked the courage and ability to stand on their own and represent themselves with dignity. In The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, Chaucer grants women with the dominant role, ironically as he demonstrates the powers held by such characters as the Wife of Bath, Alison from the Miller’s Tale, and Pertelote from the Nun’s Priest Tale.
Women are able to control their husbands in many different ways. For example, the Wife of Bath has had “five husbands legal at the church door” and has controlled every one of them till their end. Chaucer depicts the wife as a nagging and obnoxious person since she has had five husbands and has driven them all to their end through unclear ways.......
