Reflections of a Metropolitan Lady
Virginia Woolf once pondered in her diary, “Why do I dramatize London perpetually?” (Woolf 434). As she strolled down the London avenues jotting down the scene with her lead pencil, she never ceased to relay the beauty of the glimmering evening streets and the peace that she found in its quiet “groves of darkness.” (Woolf 4) While some scholars state that the source of her creativity is in her own femininity, my paper argues that “the city” inspired and provoked her to write. The atmosphere of the city space forced women in general to voice their opinions and grievances as a means of survival. Woolf dramatized London because the city helped her find her voice, first, by inspiring the stories and essays she wrote. More deeply, the city defined her internal psychology. She wrote of her inner turmoil at leaving the city, her bisexuality......
