One disagreement at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787 was the issue of slavery. Both halves of the colonies wanted slavery, the South more than the North. However, the main concern was that of taxes. The North agreed to having some slavery, but they believed that the slaves should also have taxes placed upon them. The South wanted slavery very badly, seeing as most of their economic system was based on hard, manual labor in the heat, and they didn’t want to do that, thus, slaves. The South argued that slaves were people too and their owner should not have to pay taxes on them. However, the North called the South on hypocrisy, saying that if the slaves were not property, then that meant that they were people, and, thus, un-own able. This argument lasted for quite some time, and only ended when there was an agreement between the North and the South known today as the Three Fifths Compromise.
