Our Memory
Memory is the system that stores, recovers, organizes and allows us to retain information and bring it to mind. Human memory as a type of information processing system with three basic processes: encoding, storage and retrieval.
When I looked at List 1, at first I was converting the “Food” information into a form usable in memory, then for 60 seconds, I was retaining the information in my memory (that’s storage), at last, I was bringing to mind information stored in my memory. Lastly I wrote the information food on the data sheet.
We encode information in different ways, including acoustically (coded by sound), visually (coded by forming mental picture), and semantically (coded by meaning). So I remembered the “Food” list, I used 3 ways of encoding.
I used acoustic coding when I was trying to remember the “Food words” in mind by repeating it to myself, “beef, ground, steak, roast” etc. Then I encoded this information visually by picturing a mental......
