Gender Identity disorder has three basic types of disorders, according to Plotnik (1999) which are gender identity (discomfort with identity as male or female) ,
Paraphilias (perference for unusual acts to achieve sexual arousal) , and sexual dysfunctions (impairments in sexual functioning) (p.515). Gender Identity Disorder is
commonly referred to as transsexualism. A transsexual is a person with a strong desire to or feeling of wanting to be the other sex, is uncomfortable about being one's
assigned sex, and may wish to live as a member of the other sex (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Typically this disorder is one in which an individual male or
female is certain that he/she was born as the wrong sex. Where that particular individual would gain desires to be with the same gender perferable. Gander Identity Disorder
occurs in both children and adults.
