In a world where sports prevail as society’s favorite pastime, there seems to be a blurred line concerning how much aggression is acceptable. Depending on the position of the individual (i.e., athlete, parent, coach, or fan), the distortion stems from a variety of reasoning.
It all begins at an early age when parents encourage their child to try out for an organized sport. The belief is that sports help to promote confidence, teamwork, and dedication, among other things. However, not all children are athletically inclined, but may still feel the need to participate due to parental pressures. One particular study proves that children may perceive their parent’s increased involvement in the sport as stressful as opposed to supportive (Kanters, Bocarro, & Casper, 2008). This pressure manifests into aggression and is released in the game where it is accepted as a normal part of healthy competition.
