Decisions in Paradise
Hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes can have catastrophic impacts that are felt across the world. The impact can affect our finances, economy and environment. An impact of a natural disaster can include loss of life, injury, health concerns, unemployment, homelessness and major disruption in communities. Environmental damage can range from small towns being wiped off an island or small rural cities in the United States being swept away.
A study done in 1997 claimed that “from 1960 to 1989, hurricanes in the South Pacific resulted in the deaths of 28,000 people, disrupted the lives of 6 million people and destroyed property worth U.S. $16 billion,” (Pulwarty and Riebsame, 1997, p.194; attributed to OAS, 1991). Studies have helped us to draw attention to and identify regions that are at risk, and assist in planning to help prepare for these future events when and if they occur.
