Law And Order 19th Century

In the beginning pf the nineteenth century there was not enough action being taken to keep the streets of cities, such as London, safe. The methods used for keeping crime at bay were the same used since the Middle Ages. Watchmen and bow street runners provided little safety in busy towns, as there was a lot more people than in country villages where everyone knew everyone.

The Industrial Revolution meant machines could mass-produce items which before had been made by hand. More people flocked to the towns for jobs causing overcrowding. The fight for jobs caused some to resort to crime for money. Riots were also on the increase as the working class were unable to vote and this was the only way for people to get their opinions heard. The working classes were not the only unhappy ones, as the middle and upper classes found it harder to protect their possessions.
