Predestination, Election, and Freewill
The doctrine of Predestination is one of the most central and misunderstood Biblical teaching. It is difficult to understand everything the Bible says concerning predestination, election, and free will because they do not fit into a neat logical system. The following views on predestination, election, and free will (primarily Calvinist) will be stated, the history of the doctrine will be given, and the varying views among Calvinist presented.
Predestination is the view that God has already chosen who will have eternal life, without the individual’s prior knowledge, and thus salvation cannot be based on one’s own merit. “The English noun predestination does not occur in the Bible.” The word predestinate is linked to other words that are used often: 1) to determine 2) to foreknow 3) to elect.
