A Giant Leap
“Because of what you have done the heavens have become a part of man’s world.” This congratulatory message was made by President Nixon to the astronauts of the Apollo 11 in July of 1969. These astronauts made world-wide history by becoming the first team of astronauts to successfully land and walk on the surface of the moon. The landing of the lunar module, Eagle, on the surface of the moon was one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. This event proved that man could safely land and walk on the moon.
One of the heroic astronauts involved in the Apollo 11 mission was Edwin Aldren, more popularly known by his nick-name “Buzz.” Aldren was born in Montclair, NJ. His father was a pilot and colonel in the United States Air Force. Aldren went on to graduate from West Point in 1951 and then joined the Air Force. He soon became involved in the Korean War.
