ARE THE INTERESTS AND ABILITIES OF THE UNDERREPRESENTED SEX (FEMALES) BEING ACCOMMODATED AT A SOUTHERN DIVISION I UNIVERSITY?
Abstract
In this study, we examine women’s interests and abilities in swimming & diving and bowling at a Southern NCAA Division I University (the University). Women undergraduate students enrolled in Physical Education/Teacher Education (PETE), Sport and Leisure Studies (SLS), and Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) courses completed a student interest survey (n = 75). Results revealed that there was a significant level of interest in participation of these two sports; however, few participants had experience from high school or competitive teams. Also, we found that there was a higher interest in bowling than in swimming & diving. From this study, we conclude that further analysis of student interests is beneficial for the University in their proactive approach to Title IX compliance.
