Perception
In this essay I will outline the basis of the claim that the rods and cones in the human eye represent two different visual systems. I will discuss what advantages and disadvantages such a dual system might have for visual performance.
Overview of the visual system - The Versatile Eye
The retina is where the visual system and perception starts. The retina is a thin layer of nerve cells that lines the back of the eye. This contains photoreceptors called rods and cones. These alter light which enters the eye into electrical energy that the nervous system delivers to the brain. Our brain then uses this information to enable us to see the world around us. (Goldstein, 1999).
The two kinds of photoreceptors, rods and cones, have two separate functions:
CONES Activated in high light Responsible for daylight and colour vision
RODS Activated in low light Responsible for night vision and colour blind
Rods and cones both activate bipolar cells (a bipolar cell is a neuron)......
