Domestic Violence
The commonly held belief is that the family is a place of privacy, safety and support. Where the individual is protected and sheltered from any external pressures he or she may be experiencing in the public world and supported unconditionally. While this view of family for many people does ring true, it doesn’t unfortunately apply to everyone. The reality is that many families have darker secrets, which would appear to go unnoticed by the majority society. Violence within the household and in intimate relationships is an unfortunate, harsh reality that is a serious problem especially for women in Australia and abroad. In fact, so serious is the problem that a 1996 survey found that 42% of all women that had ever been in a relationship had experienced some kind of violent incident (ABS 1996, cited in McMurray 2004).
