Taking Sides
Taking Sides, by Ronald Harwood, was directed by Elizabeth Carlson, performed by the Poisoned Cup Players and held in McManus Theatre at Loyola this past weekend. The play was set in the post war 1940’s during the Denazification process that was being carried out by American investigators. It followed the efforts of Major Steve Arnold, who was played by Greg Westphal, as he attempted to bring down Wilhelm Furtwangler, played by Paul Zajac, who was the famous and beloved conductor of Germany throughout the Nazi Regime era.
The setting was centered in Major Arnold’s office, and Carlson used the characters to drive the play with the intense conversations and arguments. The major theme she was driving at was around the deeply debated issue of politics versus art on the governmental and legal level, and where separation, if any, exists or should exist.
