Alexander Hamilton – The Dual That Costed His Life By Avital Faershtein

Alexander Hamilton was born on the British West Indian Island of Nevis, probably in 1755, and immigrated to the United States in 1772. During The American Revolutionary War, he joined the American militia and fought in the battles around New York City in 1775 and 1776. Hamilton became senior aide-de-camp and confidant to General George Washington, and led three battalions at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. He was elected to the Continental Congress, but resigned to practice law and to found the Bank of New York. He served in the New York Legislature, and was the only New Yorker who signed the Constitution. With James Madison and John Jay, he wrote an influential series of essays, later known as the Federalist papers, in defense of the new Constitution and republican government. Hamilton became leader of the Federalist Party. He favored friendship with Britain and influenced Washington to take a neutral stand toward the French Revolution.
