Saving Private Ryan
The movie Saving Private Ryan was partly inspired by the letter to Mrs. Bixby, written by Abe Lincoln to express sympathy to a mother who lost five sons who had been killed in the Civil War. This called for James Francis Ryan’s (Matt Damon) return to his mother after losing his other three brothers, two in Normandy and one the Far East. The War Departments sole survivor policy would have the army send a man by the name of Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, to be charge of a search party to bring Private Ryan out of France and back to the States. This search party consisted of 8 men traveling across France behind enemy lines. Considering that the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment’s drop was one of the least accurate of all the drops of the invasion of Normandy, the hardest part of Captain Miller’s mission would be finding one man amongst thousands.
