Many at METRO felt that the dollars used for the RFID program could have a larger ROI if invested elsewhere. They felt that the initiates used at Toyota had proved that supply chain problems could be addressed without a capital intense project like RFID.

- Getting ahead of themselves
METRO used Generation 1 tags for the initial evaluation of RFID. When it came time to move to a larger scale, they had to switch all their equipment that would be compatible with generation 2 RFID tags. They also had to have all the suppliers participating in the program switch equipment as well.

- Managing Supplier Relationships
The RFID tagging system revolved around suppliers implementing the system at their own expense. The larger suppliers would participate, but the smaller ones didn’t. We could see larger would try to cut corners and not be as involved as the Metro group. This would be a last step process......
