40 Year Bachelors
The Forty Year Baccalaureate
I anticipate the thunderous applause in Strahan Coliseum. I, like all graduates, will have truly earned it; earned my forty year Baccalaureate Degree. I think that somewhere after ten or fifteen years I stopped calling it a Bachelor’s Degree. I am no Bachelor! In May, I watched my youngest daughter cross the stage in Strahan, earning her Master’s in Theatre, and I reflected on myself and my educational path. Soon—or dare I say finally—it will be my turn. I am a fifty-seven year old black American female still in heated pursuit of my dream of obtaining a Baccalaureate degree. I have been attending college sporadically since 1969, the year I graduated from high school. I have conquered many an obstacle to get to the point I am today, a summer commencement awaiting me on the horizon.
