1968: America Approaching Revolution
The United States during 1968 to 1974 was headed towards revolution, a trend that ended with sobering Watergate scandal and Nixon’s resignation. Many minority groups saw this era as a time to vent their frustration, leading to increased dissatisfaction. Martin Luther King’s assassination had sent a message to many in the civil rights movements that non-violence was not the answer. Many advocates of a peaceful withdrawal from Vietnam found their hopes betrayed as Robert Kennedy was assassinated and Eugene McCarthy lost the primaries to Humphrey, who was not anti-war. Vietnam was at it’s worst in 1968-9, and Nixon’s policies in Vietnam only exacerbated the opposition to the war. In the middle of these great social upheavals, Nixon’s resignation was the wake-up call that brought the nation to its senses and ended the path to revolution.
