The Olympics: Myth vs Fact
Many myths surround the Ancient Olympics. One myth says the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles a son of Zeus. Other myths state that all Greek Olympians were amateurs and that all wars in Greece would stop during the Olympics. The most recent myth has to do with our 5 ring symbol of the Modern Olympics. According to this myth the 5 rings were an ancient Greek symbol for the Ancient Olympics. This is said to be supported by a picture of a stone block believed to be 3,000 years old from Delphi and show the unification between Ancient Olympia with the Modern Olympics today. Unfortunately none of these are true. Fact is the first Olympic Games we have a written record for was in 776 BCE. Coroebus ran the Stade, which was a race about 210 yards, naked and was the first Olympic Champion in written history.
