Nationalizing healthcare in the United States is proving to be a hot topic for politicians in recent years. National Healthcare, also known as socialized medicine, is a publicly funded healthcare system, funded either by the government or by the public, and in some cases both. It is also known as single payer insurance. Many contest that this is a necessity and of high priority to provide each and every American with healthcare coverage. This sounds noble and makes for a substantial argument on the political campaign trail, however, many feel it will be detrimental to our healthcare system if we incorporate such a system.

Canada started their national healthcare system in the 1950’s. What started as publicly funded hospital insurance then, turned into full fledged comprehensive healthcare by the 1970’s (Lemieux, 1989).
