Unanimous verdicts versus majority verdicts have been debated for years. Most Americans have an opinion on which is the correct way to decide a verdict. Only two states allow majority verdicts at this time. All states should be majority ruled because it takes less time, with less fighting between jurors and causes less chance of a hung jury.
Although many people think a lot of time is needed to decide on a verdict, the truth is much of that extra time is wasted. Verdicts will be quicker and easier to reach. Jurors will be less stressed and overwhelmed with determining a verdict. It’s more frustrating to jurors in a unanimous situation because they have to be there longer and all reach an agreement. There isn’t a lot of difference between the outcomes in unanimous and majority verdicts other than the faster deliberation time. Public funds will also be minimized.
