Valentina Tereshcova

Valentina Tereshkova was born on March 6, 1937. She flew aboard Vostok 5 from June 16-June 19, 1963. Valentina was born in a peasant or poor family. She was born and raised in Maslennikovo Yaroslavl, which back then was in the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialite Republics), but now it is located in Russia. Her father, a tractor driver, Vladimir Aksyenovich Tereshkova, went missing in action in the Finno-Russian War of 1939-1940. She worked at a textile factory when she was 18. Not much long after she joined a club of amateur parachutists in 1961, the exact year in which the Soviet Space Program began to consider sending a woman into space. She learned sky diving through the DOSAAF Aviation Club in Yaroslavl, an auxiliary organization of the Soviet Air Force. Tereshkova made her first jump on 21 May 1959.
