In the last two decades, the African continent has been plagued by inter and intra sate conflicts. Ethnic and religious clashes have been common in most countries on the continent with some escalating to full scale civil wars as in the case of Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cot d’ivoire , bringing with it death, despair and destruction to the citizenry.
Africa, since the eve of the 21st century has been challenged by a variety of complex political, economic, environmental and social upheavals in degrees, and intensity that is unprecedented in the continent. These challenges have launched the continent into a series of devastating intra state conflicts ever experienced in a single continent anywhere in the world in the last decade and a half. Eighth of the fifteen “complex emergencies” declared by the United Nations department of humanitarian affairs were in Africa.
