In what ways, and with what results, did the US Cold War policy of containment affect Cuba after 1959?
The Cold War was the period of conflict, tension and competition between the USA and the USSR and their allies. It lasted from the mid 1940s until the early 1990s. Throughout the period there were no physical conflicts, however there were periods of escalation that threatened even the existence of humanity. One of the most important confrontations during the Cold War was the events that unfolded in Cuba in 1962. These events were termed the ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’ by the Americans, the ‘Caribbean Crisis’ by the Russians and the ‘October Crisis’ by the Cubans. It is regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to escalating into a full scale nuclear war.
