Educating Athletes to Prevent CA-MRSA Spread
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) a common type of bacteria that is often found on the skin and in the nose of healthy people. It can also grow in wounds or other sites in the body, sometimes causing an infection. Until recently the focus on prevention has been in the acute care and long term care settings because the bacteria were considered prevalent only in these settings. “It was believed that MRSA was acquired only in the healthcare setting, thus the focus did not include the community at large” (C. Frank, ICP, personal communication November 15, 2007).
