Ferrol Sams
Ferrol Sams spent the majority of his life as a doctor with a love of literature which he expressed in his novels based on his childhood in Fayette County. Sams was born September 26, 1922 in Fayetteville, GA to Ferrol Sr., a school superintendent, and Mildred Matthews. He attended Mercer University and graduated in 1942. He then went to Emory University School of Medicine for two quarters before joining the U.S. Army Medical Corps. After serving from 1943 to 1947 and seeing action in France, Sams returned to Emory to continue his medical studies; he received his M.D. in 1949 ("New Georgia Encyclopedia: Ferrol Sams (b. 1922)").
Unlike many other writers, writing was not Ferrol’s main occupation. Ferrol did not publish his first book, Run with the Horseman, until he was sixty years old.
