Monitoring Native Vegetation On A Dumpsite Of Pcb-Contaminated Soil

Environmental pollution is one of the world's most serious problems, requiring the highest priority. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) together with polychlorodibenzop-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDFs) are representative of persistent organic pollutants. Persistence is related to the physico-chemical characteristics of these molecules. Studies have demonstrated their long-term accumulation in soils and sediments, and also progressive bioaccumulation in food chains. Their toxicity is comparable to that of other halogenated aromatic compounds and a major health risk is associated with long-term exposure. Global production of PCBs was estimated to be in the order of 1.5 million tons between the 1930s and 1970s (USSR, not included). Mixtures of PCBs were used for their effective dielectric properties and their thermal stability.
