In less than 30 years time, Taiwan has done what many African and Asian
countries have struggled for 200 years to accomplish. The number of children a
Taiwan women averages bearing has been brought down from five to 1.7.

This has made Taiwan the focus of world population studies. They
attribute this mostly to the Taiwan Provincial Institute of Family Planning. Taiwan
has been ranked by the World Population Crisis Committee number one in
promoting birth control and family planning. During the early years of the
program, the percentage of people using birth control was only around 15%.
Today the number is astonishing as it has risen to nearly 90%. They have
done this on a small budget, but attribute a lot of the success to the medical
workers for preaching to households to use birth control. South Korea spent
twice as much on its family planning and Indonesia trippled the ammount. The
