Maximizing Cost Efficiency in the Production of Zinc Iodide
Introduction: The purpose of this lab was to determine the most cost effective method to produce zinc iodide from its constituents, zinc and iodine. The limiting reagent was determined so that the process could be refined to be as effective as possible. The use of the experimental procedure proved to be beneficial, however there was still ample room for human error.
Experimental Procedure: First of all, 10mL of .2M acetic acid was prepared by diluting 2mL of 1M acetic acid with 8mL of distilled water. Three boiling chips were then added into a large test tube (test tube 2), and the mass of the tube with the contents was measured using a triple beam balance. Next, approximately .5g of zinc and .5g of iodine were measured and placed into a separate, medium-sized test tube (test tube 1).
