Introduction
The Chinese one child policy is a very topical issue having sparked a lot of attention since the earthquake that struck China in May this year.
This essay will cover the background of the policy, the effects the policy has had on Chinas population and society and the possible future the policy faces.
The Background;
The policy was introduced in 1979. The Chinese government deemed it a “short terms measure” their perspective being to create a voluntary “small family” culture. (1) The plan was originally proposed as China was facing a population crisis, being home to a quarter of the world population, Two thirds of which were under the age of 30, yet only occupying 7 percent of the worlds arable land. Government officials were worried that if these figures were to continue, the sustainability of china would be under threat. (2)
