1984

1984, a novel written by George Orwell, portrays a dismal prediction of a “negative utopia” that runs on the base of brainwashing civilians, daily propaganda, and torture. The novel describes how dangerous a totalitarian and oligarchy society is portrayed in the year 1984 from the year 1949. Winston Smith, the main character, is in opposition to the totalitarian society, under a single Party dictatorship, and the legal authority who only seeks power for their own sake and benefit. The story is set in “Oceania”, the combined continent of America and the British Isles. The state, Oceania, is run by the Party and Big Brother. The Party uses various methods to control its citizens. Big Brother is never seen, but the people are made to believe that he does exist. Winston is unable to agree with the society that is created by the Party. Winston is against Big Brother, scribbling, “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER” (19) in his diary.
