"Xmas" is an American short story written by the American writer Russell Banks. It first appeared in “The Angel on the Roof�, published by Secker & Warburg in 2000. It is set in the north-eastern part of America on Christmas Eve, where the protagonist of the story, Gregory, is on his way from New Hampshire to Boston. Gregory is an emotionally weary, twice-divorced white New Englander who is somewhat conceitedly bringing expensive Christmas presents to his poor girlfriend. He is what one would describe as a methodical person, or so at least he believes himself to be. This is seen in these following quotes: “He kept the Audi at seventy all the way into Charleston�, and also when he sees the loosely wired number plate: “Gregory imagined fixing it with a pair of twenty-cent stove bolts� . This “order� in which he believes his life to be, is about to collapse with the “incident� of the story, because as of most short stories this one also focuses on only one......
