A Very Long Engagement
In the movie “ A Very Long Engagament” there is a sadness of love buried underneath the trenches of the war. Along with this sadness is a strong showing of Militarism and how it ruined so many lives in the years 1914-1918. Matilde’s account of lost love and hope has made her goal to struggle through the harsh realities of life to try to find an answer, an answer which she surely knows will cripple her mind. The strong sense of militarism comes in the depiction of how violent and unnecessary the war was. The director of the movie cuts back to the war references of sending the five out and showing their deaths it shows a sense of nationalism as well. This nationalism shown is not the original “proud” acknowledgement of a nation but rather the nation throwing out its own blood into crossfire of “jerry” guns, guaranteed death.
