Christianity in Beowulf
During the Anglo-Saxon period in England there were two major religions brought into the country by different means of transportation. During this time the English society was in the process of converting from the old Pagan beliefs the newly introduced Christian beliefs. Paganism was left by the Scandinavians who had invaded England in the earlier part of England’s history. Christianity was brought into England by the Romans who invaded in 55 B.C. England remained part of the Roman Empire for about four centuries (Ruffel 8). By combining these two very different religions the poet was able to accentuate the principles of his era by enhancing the behavior of the Pagan and Christian lifestyles.
Christianity plays a very important role in Beowulf, for example Beowulf’s character is a kind-of Christ figure in the eyes of the Danish, because Beowulf came to save them from Grendal, much like Jesus came to save the Jews. Beowulf shows very strong courage......
