Philippines
The Philippines has many diverse traditional holidays that are not celebrated here in Canada, but may perhaps be acknowledged by people who originated from the Philippines, or have Philippine ancestry. Such public holidays include, Bataan Day, National Heroes Day, Bonifacio Day and Rizal Day. Bataan day occurs when the country commemorates the Philippine and American soldiers who lost their lives defending the peninsula of Bataan in the Philippines against the Japanese, and those who afterwards died on the “Bataan Death March”. This occurred when the captured allies were made to march nearly a hundred miles to Japanese holding camps, ultimately causing many to die of illness, starvation and dehydration. Furthermore, National Heroes day, which falls on the 4th Monday of August, commemorates the effort of the Katipunan. This revolutionary group of rebels’ main goal was to gain independence from Spain.
