Controversial Context

What, do you think you’re black? This is the question that I was asked ever since I decided what type of music I wanted to listen to and what brand of clothing I wanted to wear. It began to aggravate me from the very first time I heard it. I wasn’t mad that they were questioning my style, but at the fact that they were accusing me of copying someone else’s. I wasn’t mad at the hurtful comments and I wasn’t mad that they were attempting to degrade me through stereotypes. What got to me was the fact that I was being categorized instead of being thought of as an individual who has the capability to think for himself. Many of these stereotypes came from the cruel school children, my peers, who were actually older than their actions proved to be. I didn’t plan on changing for anyone. I had my own expression of self and individuality that I planned on exhausting until people got the point. Sadly, many people will never understand the world outside of high school......
