Photography has become one of the most predominant forms of art in the twenty first century; with technology constantly evolving it allows artists to express themselves in ways that are impossible otherwise, thus drawing more people towards this field.

Photography originates from the ‘camera obscura’, Latin for dark room/box. The Obscura was a dark room/box which has a small hole in one end; provided the hole was small enough an inverted image would appear on the opposite wall (See figure 1). It is unclear who discovered the ‘camera obscura’ with times dating back to Aristotle (300BC) and Hassan Ibn Hassan (Ibn al Haitam). The camera obscura developed into a portable box device which was commonly used as a drawing tool by seventeenth and eighteenth century artists (See figure 2 & 3). As the camera obscura became more common, many became pre-occupied with the concept of permanently recording these images. (Leggat, accessed 19/10/08)
