The Journey

Between the first and second century, literature changed structure and format nearly as fast as government changed. Typically, these frequent upheavals transformed written literature to the values of the audience for which the story was written. However dysfunctional the language, medieval and Anglo-Saxon writers, and in some cases, poets, wrote in several styles that included Olde English, Romance, and more modernistic or realistic narrative forms. These forms of literature use several culturally significant values, such as a heroic code, a supernatural event, or the code of chivalry, to name a few. These themes are exemplified in the work of the Beowulf poet, Mallory, and Chaucer by the journey in which the characters are challenged to share their past heroic adventures, moral obligations, and in some cases, fear of death, with the reader.
