The economic costs to our nation are astronomical. A study released by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in 1992 estimated that the economic cost of alcohol and drug abuse was $246 billion. This estimate represents $965 for every man, woman, and child living in the United States in 1992. The monetary amount by today’s standards would logically be even higher. This encompasses alcohol abuse related to lost productivity; either due to alcohol-related illness or premature death, health care expenditures to treat alcohol use disorders and the medical consequences of alcohol, administrative costs of alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes, and various additional costs of alcohol-related crime......
