Romanticism
American Romanticism start right after the revolutionary war, before the war most of the writing was non-fiction, and mostly about the British. To be able to enjoy this type of writing you need to be able to suspend your disbeliefs.
Often in Romanticism the characters are not well developed. That is because that is not what is important in Romanticism style of writing. The important part of Romanticism is the plot and the symbolism is what is important. Also you should be able to feel emotions that come from the story rather then reasoning with what is happening in the story. You need to be open to learning new things, and letting your imagination wonder.
