Domestication is defined as the human creation of a new form of plant or animal- one that is identifiably different from its wild ancestors and extant wild relatives. Usually, these new forms of plants and animals are created by human forced physical barriers and selective pressures which cause differentiation. As Bruce Smith addresses in his article, hunter-gatherer societies of the past and present have used various tactics to reshape their environments in order to make them more to their liking. It is this manipulation of plant and animal communities in order to reduce the risk of their own lives that domesticated plants and animals were essentially created.
Seed manipulation marks the most interesting and important element in plant domestication.
