Church of Christ (Science) a.k.a. Christian Science
Many of us are familiar with Christian Science reading rooms and have probably walked right passed them without really thinking about what is inside. But what is inside? Why does Christian Science require a room where their adherents go to read about their faith? Let’s start with some Christian Science history.
In 1821, Mary Ann Morse Baker was born, in Bow, New Hampshire, to parents of the Congregationalist faith. Mark Baker, her father, was a Calvinist. Later in life Mary would have some very strong disagreements with him over the religious basics of his faith and what she believed was true. Mary was one of 5 children. She was a sickly child who was frequently ill and highly emotional. One of my references referred to her as “domineering, quarrelsome, and extremely self-centered.” (Martin, 2007)
